Developing native SAP HANA applications involves creating and working with many different development artifacts, often referred  to as content. Without proper organization and management of this content, the development process can become more error-prone, which can negatively impact quality, efficiency, and timelines of development projects as well as affecting quality of the resulting application. SAP HANA Application Lifecycle Management provides a lightweight and easy-to-use SAP HANA-based application which is comprised of two major aspects: tools to help organize the tasks required for setting up and managing the metadata describing the content of a software product; and tools used to manage the change management process in a promote-to-production system landscape, normally referred to as transport.

The SAP HANA Application Lifecycle Management tools for maintaining a product  provide a means to quickly set up the main components which provide structure for the development artifacts of an application. More precisely, the product maintenance tools are used to create metadata for both the product and delivery unit (DU), and to assign delivery units to a project; it can be used to define repository packages and, optionally, some frequently used base objects. Ultimately, the product maintenance features provide an orderly approach to managing metadata definition of development artifacts, which can help to increase quality and efficiency in the development process.

The SAP HANA Application Lifecycle Management tools for change management provide precise control over the promote-to-production aspect of the development process, referred to transport. When developing the content that comprises an application, artifacts must be exported from the development system and sent to a test system for testing purposes, and eventually, to a production system for real-world use. If strict oversight is missing in this process, quality and efficiency of the development process, and quality of the application itself, can suffer significantly.

The SAP HANA Application Lifecycle Management tools for transport provide the ability to set up transport routes between the systems in the landscape and to assign delivery units or a product to a transport route, which defines the groupings of objects which get transported together. The tools also provide the ability to execute exports and imports of the delivery units containing the development artifacts, and to monitor the transport processes. In short, these features of  SAP HANA Application Lifecycle Management provide substantial control over the change management aspects of the development process, which helps ensure its quality, efficiency, and timelines, which ultimately is reflected in the quality of the resulting application.
