The age-old answer for energy efficiency is “Measure and Manage”. Once we identify how much energy a person or a building uses, then the consumption can be reduced. When huge amount of energy data is emerging from sensors, devices like smart meters etc, utilizing the entire energy data will require big data tools as a fundamental way to help manage energy consumption. A few utility firms are already turning to big data tools to deliver key aspects of energy efficiency by running heavy analytics on the energy data.

Why big data about energy is important

The power grid is beginning to add more information that will enable computing, sensors, smart meters and software to collect energy data about consumption, available clean power and energy efficiency.

Smart meters which can read energy consumption every 15 minutes are being installed as first step towards efficient energy planning. As these devices spread they will generate data that utility firms will be able to use to better manage the load on the network and perform advanced predictive analytics

Years down the road, when the power grid has gone completely digital, there will be massive amount of energy data helping to manage energy efficiently. Those managing such a large amount of data will need to utilize the next generation big data tools.

SAP HANA and Hadoop as Big Data Tool

The capabilities of SAP HANA in conjunction with Apache Hadoop framework will enable customer to rapidly deploy data analytics solution using SAP HANA while also leveraging Hadoop for massive data processing, storage and computing power needed for Big Data analytics.

The Hadoop ecosystem, has been gaining interest from companies that use it to examine social media content, blogs and other click stream data as it can handle petabytes of information that are normally challenging to handle on any traditional databases. SAP HANA, on the other hand, stores data in memory rather than at the disk level, offering a significant performance boost. Hence, Hadoop can be used as a storage mechanism for data that SAP HANA can analyse at very high speeds. The combination of SAP HANA and Hadoop can scale an enterprise’s needs almost endlessly.

Advantages of this integrated architecture:

  1. Big Data integration capabilities
  2. Hive and Hadoop Distributed File System for faster ‘reading from’ and ‘loading to’ performance and scalability
  3. Big data applications and analytics (analyse more history data)
  4. Data intensive distributed applications
  5. Analyse various data sources by performing linguistic analysis and extracts relevant content from files, Web logs and social media
  6. Enable organizations to take unstructured data within a large Hadoop data cluster, give it structure, and then serve it up into a HANA database where transactions can be quickly accessed.
  7. Empower people and organizations to work together more efficiently by allowing them to mine large amounts of data and receive real-time decision making information.
