Interested in finding out more about BW on HANA?

I asked Dan Kearnan, Director for Data Warehouse Marketing, to take a few minutes to share a few insights with us.

Dan has spent a career in data management – he’s the perfect guy to inform us about:

  • Business trends and drivers
  • Addressable IT challenges
  • Implications to existing BW and BWA customers

Hi there!

Calling all attendees of SAPPHIRE NOW and SAP TechEd Madrid on Nov. 8th-10th who are interested in SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse powered by SAP HANA.

In order to help you work out where to be at a given moment we’ve created a dedicated “Golden Agenda” that will guide you to relevant presentations, hands-on workshops, test-drives, mini-theaters, discussion forums and demo pods that specifically focus on SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse powered by SAP HANA.

As SAPPHIRE NOW and SAP TechEd are combined into one event, we've created two tracks in the Golden Agenda:  One for the business person focusing mainly on the SAPPHIRE NOW Business Analytics and Data Warehousing agenda and the other for those seeking a deeper level of technical detail which focuses mainly on the SAP TechEd agenda. Obviously there’s some cross-over between the two agendas where content is relevant to both audiences.

Download the attached Golden Agenda to ensure you don’t miss out on the key sessions on SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse powered by SAP HANA.

Have a great SAPPHIRE NOW and SAP TechEd!

Golden Agenda for SAP NetWeaver Business Warehouse Powered by SAP HANA

My name is Matthias Wild and I worked in various roles in the IT department at SAP AG in the last 10 years. I was connected to BW / BI all the time and took over the role of the Enterprise Architect for Analytics this year. Currently my main task and day-to-day business is to manage the infrastructure and platform work stream in the ‘New BI’ program at SAP.

‘New BI’ is a transformational program intending to provide a single source of truth Business Intelligence environment and self-service capabilities in an integrated platform based on proliferation of Business Objects tools for SAP; all built on the latest architectural set-up with an early adoption of HANA In-Memory database and consistent data governance in conjunction with an enterprise-wide data layer (EDL).

Ok, that’s a description which can include everything and nothing, so what’s in? The task is to build the ‘latest architectural set-up’ and use an ‘early adoption of HANA’. Two of our deliverables are the latest SAP Business Objects 4.x platform fully integrated with an SAP Netweaver BW 7.3 powered by SAP HANA – including all operational concepts to run all kind of business-critical reporting and planning on this BI platform.

To achieve this early-adoption targets the program became Ramp-Up customer for BusinessObjects 4.0 and SAP NetWeaver BW 7.3 (For everybody who is not used to SAP runs SAP: The business lines at SAP are not just using the SAP software, they also act as a real customer. That’s why an IT project for Ramp-Up at SAP runs in the same way as it would run in your company, with BI consultants, Ramp-Up coach, tickets, …). That was normal business. But the next step was not.

We became also co-innovation partner of the SAP development organization to start with the usage of HANA SP3 in a pre-ramp-up revision in June. That did include SP5 for BW as well, as it is a prerequisite for HANA SP3. The infrastructure is a certified single-server HANA appliance with 1TB main memory and 64 CPUs / 128 Cores. Definitely not normal business … but very exciting.

Very important for the project was not to end up with a highly customized prototype, but to have consistent path from co-innovation and beta-software, to the ramp-up program of HANA SP3 in November and full business readiness with a high-availability system in 2012. If you have the real geeks sitting next to you the temptation to ‘just solve’ the current issue quick and dirty is very high. Then it is important to remind yourself that you have to run this platform for the business colleagues afterwards and you start to fix everything in a sustainable way and make the fix part of the standard.

As of today we have the test and production system in a 3-tier environment migrated to HANA … and I am highly impressed about the stability we have. In two weeks we will roll-out several new reporting and planning solutions and bring more business users on the system.

Wave 1 setup for Q4 2011 with 3 tiers and certified single servers.

Wave 2 setup for early 2012 with 4 tiers, certified distributed servers and high availability.

Currently we use the monitoring and alerting framework in the HANA Studio for operations. Very soon we will start to use Solution Manager SP4 to manage BI-BW-HANA end-to-end analysis. This and the move from the single server environment to distributed server environments with failover capabilities are the next important steps for us to make the landscape ready for business critical BI solutions.

I will share more insights at experiencesaphana.com in the next weeks. Stay tuned.

Best regards,

Innovation Without Disruption SAP® NetWeaver BW  powered by SAP HANA

SAP Delivers Next Wave of In-Memory Innovations With SAP NetWeaver BW powered by SAP HANA

SAP’s next wave of in-memory innovation, SAP NetWeaver BW Powered by SAP HANA will be showcased at the upcoming SAPPHIRE® NOW + SAP® TechEd 2011 events in Madrid, being held November 8-10. This new solution gives BW customers an unparalleled opportunity of running their BW applications on SAP HANA as a fully functioning in-memory database. There will be a host of sessions, keynotes and test drives providing specific details regarding the capabilities and benefits, and those unable to attend in person will be able to participate in the global event online via the SAPPHIRE Now virtual platform.

For years companies wanting to manage large volumes of data and ensure the integrity of information have trusted SAP NetWeaver BW.  SAP has continually evolved BW to ensure it provides a flexible foundation for enterprise data warehousing supporting data from SAP and third party source systems. Unlike other offerings, our comprehensive approach to managing information includes extract transform and load (ETL), metadata management, data quality and archival processing capabilities, as well as pre-built content. Now SAP has delivered the next stage of evolution with the availability of SAP NetWeaver BW powered by SAP HANA.

Companies running SAP NetWeaver BW on a relational database management system (RDBMS) will see dramatically improved performance by moving to their BW application on the SAP HANA platform. The massively parallel processing (MPP) architecture of SAP HANA improves data load, calculation, and query performance. The performance improvements help you gain competitive advantage through reduced data latency and increased availability. The in-memory, columnar data storage architecture of SAP HANA helps you lower total cost of ownership, reduce IT workloads and respond faster to business requests for information. Greater operational efficiency helps you gain competitive advantage by reducing waste and increasing the use of data to run your business better. And business people will have faster, easier access to all their data at any level of detail, which drives competitive advantage through greater business flexibility.

Hello, my name is Lothar Henkes and I head Product Management for SAP NetWeaver BW.  Today, I have some very exciting news to share with you: As of November 7, less than three weeks from today, BW is planned to be powered by SAP HANA!

Yes, it's finally happening!

Because this is such a ground-breaking release, I thought we would start a blog to share ideas, insights, and experiences about BW on HANA.  This blog will cover everything from in-memory data store objects and in-memory optimized InfoCubes to details about in-memory planning engines and the integration between Enterprise Data Warehouse scenarios and HANA Data Mart scenarios.  We will use videos, documents, presentations... whatever we can get our hands on to help you come up to speed as quickly as possible.

We'd love for you to participate and use this blog as a way share your own ideas, experiences, and suggestions for improvement... with us of course, but also with each other.

Stay tuned...
